2 + 2 Dual Degree Program in Counseling What is the 2 + 2 program? The “2 + 2” program describes the two final undergraduate years, coupled with two years of graduate study required to earn your master’s degree in professional counseling or school counseling. A student may transfer to Texas Wesleyan and complete a bachelor’s degree in any area with a minor in counseling or may complete a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies through a counseling cluster. If a student wishes to become a school counselor, he/she must receive teacher certification through the School of Education. Upon successful completion of a bachelor’s degree, the student will be automatically accepted into the graduate counseling program if he/she meets the stated admission requirements. The goal of this program is to recruit those students interested in becoming counselors and facilitate their entry into either the graduate program in professional counseling (MA) leading to licensure as a professional counselor, or the graduate program in school counseling (MS). Minor/Cluster in Counseling The counseling minor or cluster option provides students with an understanding of the substantive fields and issues of counseling as a profession. The counseling department provides students with an education within the liberal arts tradition. The department faculty strives to develop students who are well-versed in the crucial counseling skills required in the workplace or in graduate training. Counseling faculty members encourage and demonstrate independent thought and intellectual curiosity, both in the classroom and in individual scholarly activity. Admission to Graduate Programs Upon completing the counseling minor or cluster required for the 2 + 2 program, a student may seek priority admission to the Master of Arts in professional counseling or the Master of Science in school counseling programs. The student must have a GPA of 3.0 overall or a 3.25 in his/her last 60 hours to receive priority admission. However, a student who has completed the required counseling courses along with statistics will not be required to submit an essay or letters of recommendation. Each student seeking priority admission will only have to fill out the graduate application and undergo an interview with the graduate admission committee. Because the fall entering classes fill up quickly, the benefit of participating in this 2 + 2 priority admission is to ensure you will have a seat in the fall class you intend to begin your graduate studies.
