Help Make a Difference

The Texas Wesleyan Freshman Mentorship Program invites you to assist in ensuring that new college students are successful during their first year of college, which is crucial to retaining and developing students for a promising future.

The Texas Wesleyan Freshman Mentorship Program was established to directly address this issue. Through one-on-one relationship building and guidance from volunteer faculty, staff and upperclassmen mentors, it is the program's goal that as many incoming students as possible make a smooth transition from high school to college. Such guidance provides a solid foundation for our freshmen and affords the opportunity for them to be successful students throughout their entire college career.

In order to serve our freshmen as efficiently as possible, the Texas Wesleyan Freshman Mentorship Program endeavors to introduce freshmen to mentors with similar interests and backgrounds. When a match is made, the mentors agree to call their student to remind them of important dates and to encourage them to register. Also, mentors commit to having at least three informal meetings with their students to check their overall progress. These meetings can include coffee breaks, going to on and off campus events, or simply having a causal office meeting.

To ensure that communication and interaction between mentors and freshmen is effective, a Match Support System (MSS) has been developed so that freshmen are properly served and the mentors are not overwhelmed. The MSS staff serves to remind the mentors of their commitments and to check the progress of their matches. The MSS staff also provides the mentors with an Activity Idea Sheet, which includes a list of causal activities that the match could do on campus or around town, at little to no cost, for their informal meetings.

The MSS staff continuously revises the Activity Idea Sheet and seeks outside donor assistance to provide free or discounted activities and entertainment, such as, gift certificates, ball game tickets, complimentary access to plays or events around the city. The MSS needs your help in ensuring that as many deserving matches as possible are endowed with such opportunities. Your gift would make it easier to lighten the load from of our mentors who are already deeply committed in other areas of their lives. By assisting our program, you can take pride in knowing that it is helping to start young adults on their journey to be successful in accomplishing their goals and dreams.
