Honors in History
HIS 4391 and HIS 4392: History Honors Independent Study The History Honors Independent Study program is a six hours program taken over the student’s final two semesters. A student must have completed 90 hours of study and 27 hours of history courses with at least a 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.5 grade point average in history courses. The six hours of History Honors Independent Study are in addition to the 36 hours required for the history major. The student will select a member of the history faculty to supervise his/her Honors Independent Study. Together the student and faculty member will chose a topic for investigation over the course of two semesters. The first semester will be devoted to research and the second semester to writing the Senior Honors Thesis. Students will be expected to adhere to a structure of submission deadlines established by the department during both semesters. The student will formally present his/her research at a University College Day presentation before an invited group of faculty and interested students. The student’s final paper will be read by all members of the history faculty and ranked separately by them as deserving of an honor’s designation. To receive the Honors designation on the transcript and diploma, a student must complete both semesters of Honors Independent Study and receive a satisfactory ranking from the history department faculty.
