Study Abroad Photo Contest: 12 finalist photos from last year’s trips will be on display all week through Thursday for everyone to view and vote for their favorite.  Winner of the contest will receive $100.

 

MONDAY

12:15 - 1:00  OPENING CEREMONY

Help kick off International Week with President Jeffcoat, Provost Henderson, Associate Provost Bussell, Deans Espinoza, Martinez, and Quintanilla, and Professors Chitra Chandrasekaran, Edita Ruzgyte, and Samir Vaidya.   International guitar music provided by Austin Craver and Roman CoronadoFree lunch provided by the president follows the ceremony.

3:00 - 4:00  STUDY ABROAD 2007 TRIPS: ARTS & SCIENCES

Arts and Sciences study abroad program directors and their students will show slides and talk about their trips last academic year.  Presenting are Jesse Sowell for Scotland, Julie McCoy and Steve Simon for Paris, and Amy Bell for Mexico. 

Location: West Library Orientation Room

 

4:30 - 5:30  NOCHE de MICROFONO ABIERTO

Open-Mic Night in Spanish!  Participants will have 2-3 minutes to present a poem, a scene from a play, a passage from a novel or story, even jokes and songs. You are invited to present original works or a piece by your favorite author. Sponsored by Dr. Amy Bell. Refreshments will be served.

7:00   INTERNATIONAL FILM NIGHT

Enjoy the Academy Award winning Spanish language fantasy film, Pan's Labyrinth, and free refreshments of popcorn and drinks.  Sponsored by Student Life.

TUESDAY

9:45 - 10:45  POPULATION AND SOCIETY

Dr. Greg Gullion’s Introduction to Sociology class will formally debate the topic of borderland militarization and international relations between Mexico and the United States.

12:00 - 1:00  SCOTTISH PUTTING CHALLENGE

Student Life presents a golf putting contest with prizes for winners.

Location: Brown Lupton Student Center Lobby

 

1:00 - 2:00  INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PERSPECTIVES

Bring your lunch from Dora Cafeteria and join four current Wesleyan international students who will share their cultures (in Asia, South America, Africa, Australia and Europe) and their perspectives about studying at Wesleyan as an international student. This program is sponsored by the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute.

2:00 - 3:00  CROSS-CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY

Dr. Jay C. Brown presents a talk on "A Cross Cultural Psychological Discussion of the Use of Cultural Universality vs. Cultural Relativism in Our Understanding of Different Cultures."  Often when watching the news, we hear of events happening in distant lands. People, whether consciously or unconsciously, assign a value judgment to what they see and hear. This presentation will discuss some of the issues involved when using a perspective of cultural universality in understanding events in distant lands.

3:00 - 4:00  STUDY ABROAD 2007 TRIPS: EDUCATION

Education study abroad program directors and their students will show slides and talk about their trips last academic year.  Presenting are Jasna Reed and Education Dean Carlos Martinez for both trips to Croatia and Dr. Ann Reed for Brazil.

WEDNESDAY

9:30 - 11:00  BUSINESS SCHOOL RECEPTION

The Business School will hold a reception honoring international students majoring in business.  Faculty and staff will set up displays of international mementos and greet the international students at the reception.

11:00 – 1:30  STUDY ABROAD FAIR

Students are invited to come learn about the study abroad programs at Texas Wesleyan University.  Brochures will be available.

11:30 - 2:00  ITALIAN ICE SOCIAL

Student Life serves up refreshing Italian Ice to students.

Location: Brown Lupton Student Center Lobby

 

2:00 - 3:00  IRISH DANCING PAST & PRESENT

Come learn Irish dance.  Native of Ireland, Dr. Aileen Curtin from the School of Education hosts a fast paced and dynamic show and tell.  Discover the roots of Irish dance and learn some simple steps.  Dr. Curtin will explain the development of Irish Dancing, show some clips from the world famous River Dance and Lord of the Dance, Michael Flatley, and then teach some basic Irish steps.  It is sure to be a good time!

3:00 - 4:00  2008 STUDY ABROAD PRESENTATIONS

This is your chance to learn about study abroad programs at Texas Wesleyan.  Program directors for this year’s study abroad trips will feature their trips on Wednesday:  Dr. Amy Bell goes to Mexico, Dr. Jesse Sowell to England, Connie Whitt-Lambert to London/Paris, Dr. Sowell to Ireland and two proposed Education trips to Brazil and Peru.

THURSDAY

11:30 - 12:45 INTERNATIONAL FAIR

The Internatioinal Club brings the world to you!  The popular highlight of International Week where international students from all the continents share the sights, sounds, and food of their countries.  Come learn about other countries and taste authentic food from around the world!

Location: Louella B. Martin Pavilion

 

FRIDAY

12:00 - 1:00  CLOSING CELEBRATION

Participants in International Week will celebrate the many programs of the week and international diversity.  Viva la difference. Let’s just enjoy each other!
