Who should use this application packet?

This application packet is for international student applicants who need a visa to study in the United States. If you are a U.S. citizen or
permanent resident, please request a U.S. student application by contacting the Office of Admission.

Studying in the U.S. as an international student
International students are permitted to study in the U.S. if they meet certain U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requirements. An F-1 visa
to enter the U.S. is issued only to students who have been regularly admitted for a full course of study at a U.S. institution and who also meet other regulations and requirements. Among these requirements are that students be able to 1) show proof of financial support for the period of study in the U.S. and 2) show the intent of returning to their home country once studies are completed. The U.S. embassy or consulate in your area will be able to tell you what the specific requirements are for applying for an F-1 visa.

To be regularly admitted to Texas Wesleyan University and to be issued Form I-20 (the “Certificate of Eligibility” required to apply for F-1 status—both for students coming from abroad and those transferring from another U.S. institution), an applicant must meet all requirements for admission as indicated in this packet.

The Application and Admission Information Packet
This Application and Admission Information Packet consists of instructions that should be read carefully and three forms that should be filled out completely, signed, and returned along with the required supporting documentation. The forms include the application form, the educational experience form, and the declaration of finances form. An additional form is included for undergraduate students applying for a scholarship. All information on the forms should be typed or printed clearly in ink and the forms then signed by you, the applicant, where indicated.

APPLICATION PROCESS/DEADLINES

It is recommended that you submit your completed application at least three months prior to the semester you wish to enroll. Your application will be reviewed upon receipt of all required documentation. If any portion of your application needs further action from you, we will notify you via email.
Timely submission of documents will help ensure that once admitted, you will have enough time to complete the visa application process to enter the U.S. to begin classes. In order to process your application for admission in a timely manner, the suggested deadlines are:

Fall Semester – July 1

Spring Semester – October 15

However, if we receive your application and required documentation after the suggested deadlines, we will process your application as time permits and, if necessary, roll your application over to the next available entry period.

Please Note: The application materials you send to us will become the property of Texas Wesleyan University and will be held for one calendar year (365 days) from the day we first receive your application. Application packets, including supporting documentation, not completed within one year will be destroyed.

Admission Notification

As soon as the application is complete, an admission decision will be made by the International Programs office, which is the only office authorized to notify international students of their acceptance to Texas Wesleyan University. Depending on where you live, you may reasonably expect an admission decision on your completed application within four to six weeks after receipt of ALL application materials at Texas Wesleyan University.

Academic Requirements For Admission
Undergraduate Applicants—
Students who are planning to earn a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
Applicants to the undergraduate level are normally those students who have completed at least 12 years of formal primary and secondary education with an emphasis on academic studies, resulting in the equivalent of a U.S. high school graduation diploma. Texas Wesleyan University recognizes two categories of undergraduate students: freshmen and transfer.

• Freshmen are students who have never enrolled in an accredited college or university after finishing secondary education. For admission,
freshman applicants are expected to have the equivalent of a U.S. high school grade point average of 2.5 or above (on a 4.0 scale).

• Transfer students have completed some advanced-level work at an accredited college or university. Credit for this work may be awarded
to the transfer student towards degree completion at Texas Wesleyan University on a course-by-course basis. Students who are accepted
to Texas Wesleyan University will be notified of any awarded credit after their academic credentials have been evaluated. For admission,
transfer applicants are expected to have the equivalent of a U.S. transfer grade point average of 2.0 or above; students who are transferring
fewer than 30 semester hours will be evaluated on a combined high school and college grade point average.

Graduate Applicants—Students who are planning to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees. Graduate applicants have normally already completed four-year programs of university study resulting in the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree. Graduate applicants are evaluated according to the admission criteria established for each graduate program. Further information is available from the program, in the Graduate Catalog, or by contacting the Office of International Programs. Graduate applications will be reviewed for admission by both the graduate program and Office of International Programs.

Texas Wesleyan University evaluates applicants’ foreign transcripts and determines the U.S. grade point average equivalent. In some cases,
students may be requested to provide an evaluation by an outside credentials evaluator.

Evidence of English Proficiency

To ensure reasonable success in the classroom, all students must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. International students generally show proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. To be accepted to the University, the following scores are required:

Undergraduate Applicants:
TOEFL: 68 (Internet)/190 (computer)/520 (paper test)
IELTS band score: 6.0 on the Academic Version
Note: Test scores must be less than 2 years old; the University is the
sole judge of a student’s English proficiency.

Graduate Applicants:
TOEFL: 79 (Internet)/213 (computer)/550 (paper test)
IELTS band score: 6.5 on the Academic Version
Note: Test scores must be less than 2 years old; the University is the
sole judge of a student’s English proficiency.
These are minimum requirements. Some graduate programs have
additional or different English proficiency requirements. Please refer
to specific program admission requirements for details.

Financial Requirements
The Department of Homeland Security requires that all international applicants have enough funding to support their educational and living expenses while they are in the United States. This policy is designed to protect international students by ensuring that they will not have financial problems that interfere with and interrupt their studies or that will cause them to become a public burden. Therefore, Texas Wesleyan University requires that international applicants submit evidence of financial support for their entire period of study in order to be issued Form I-20.

ESTIMATED EXPENSES
Please read the estimated expenses sheet and declaration of finances instructions carefully to determine the amount of funding you will need and
which types of evidence to submit with this application. A student is required to submit evidence of the specified amount of funding for each year of proposed study in the selected academic program—normally four years for undergraduate students and two – three years for graduate students.

Tuition, fees, room and board, and purchase (or proof) of medical insurance are due at the time of registration each semester and are subject to increase annually. It is important to have sufficient funds on hand to pay school charges as well as to purchase necessary books and supplies at the beginning of each semester or summer session. International students are not required to attend school in the summer unless they arrive in the United States for a summer session. You should determine the procedure necessary to transfer funds out of your country for the purpose of university study. This information may be obtained from your bank, national government, or the Public Affairs office at a U.S. consulate/embassy.

Please review the international admissions link on our website for a current list of estimated expenses.

EMPLOYMENT
Work opportunities for international students are limited due to restrictions mandated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services policies. A student should not count on income from work in the United States for personal or educational expenses; only a limited number of part-time jobs are available on campus.

Undergraduate Scholarship Funding
Texas Wesleyan University actively promotes efforts to attract quality students from around the world by offering a variety of scholarships to qualified undergraduate international students. The international student scholarships are in the form of tuition reduction in the amounts of $2,500 to $9,000 per year, depending on the student’s qualifications. Scholarships are classified on the student's entrance status as an entering freshman or a transfer student.  Students do not need to apply for academic scholarships. They are automatically considered when they have completed their application and are admitted.  However, it they want a performance-based scholarship, they will need to apply through the department or sport.

Texas Wesleyan University students are eligible to receive up to two institutional scholarships (one academic and one performance based, if eligible), which are awarded based on availability even if minimum requirements are met. The additional performance-based scholarship awards can be made through participation in fine arts or athletics. Outstanding students in these areas who are interested in scholarships should provide information about their skills and abilities with their application for admission.

International students may also be eligible to apply for a limited number of university-wide scholarships. These scholarships often have very narrowly
defined guidelines. Information on these limited scholarships may be obtained by contacting the international programs office or by going to the Financial Aid Scholarships page to see the “Performance” scholarships.

We further encourage students to seek information about educational funding from their home governments, through private or public international agencies and organizations, or through the Public Affairs office at a U.S. consulate/embassy. It is solely the responsibility of the student to secure funding.

Once you are admitted

Students admitted to the University will receive an acceptance packet that will include and acceptance letter and Form I-20 along with information about applying for a visa to enter the U.S.  Students who are currently in the U.S. will receive information about the transfer process to Texas Wesleyan University. Information designed to answer the many questions you may have before your arrival on campus will also be included. Much of this information can also be found on other parts of this website. The Office of International Programs will help ensure that your travel to campus is as stress-free as possible.

Housing Information
Traditional dormitories as well as on-campus apartments are available for housing; both are open during the summer and holidays. Information is available on the Residence Life hompage or you may request information from the Office of International Programs. In order to reserve a room in a residence hall, please complete the Residence Hall application online and send in the required deposit in the form of a check or a bank draft in U.S. dollars made payable to Texas Wesleyan University or by credit card number and name. Read the contract carefully and make yourself a copy before returning it. If you are interested in university housing during holidays, semester breaks, or summer terms, please
indicate your interest on your contract. If you choose to live off-campus, please note that Texas Wesleyan University is not able to locate apartments for students.
