Extension of Stay for F-1 Students F-1 Program Extension You have been admitted to the U.S. for a duration of stay that is defined in your I-20 and I-94. Duration of stay is (1) the time during which you are pursing a full course of study and are making normal progress towards completion of your program, (2) the time you may be working in Optional Practical Training after completion of studies or (3) 60 days after completion of course of study or OPT. If you will not complete your course of study by the expiration date noted on your form I-20, you must apply for a program extension. Failure to extend your stay could jeopardize your legal status and will result in your having to file an application with USCIS for reinstatement. Who should file? When and where do I file? What is accepted as a valid reason for extension by the USCIS? Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for a program extension. What do I need to take to the International Student Advisor?
If approved, the International Student Advisor will then issue you a new SEVIS I-20. You must keep this new document and all previous I-20 forms you have been issued. You will be asked to present them to an Immigration Officer on reentry when you travel outside the U. S. or whenever you apply for any future immigration benefits. |
