Program Overview

For the first time since 1992, the combined voices of the Wesleyan Singers and Chamber Singers are going on tour. They will perform at least four concerts while traveling through French-speaking Quebec province in Canada for eight days and seven nights May 17 – 24, 2010. Students enrolling in International Studies will learn and explore the history of Québec hands on. Students enrolled in Music will gain experience through performance in grand cathedirals and Basilicas. All participants will experience fabulous Montréal, Trois Rivières and Québec City along with the Wesleyan Singers and Chamber Singers them as they undertake this landmark “Festival of Spring” tour to Eastern Canada.

A learning-enhanced travel experience with emphasis on some aspects of

IST 3299-70

Special Topics: History of Quebec (2 credits)

An interdisciplinary course that traces the development of Canada’s majority French province from the before the arrival of Jacques Cartier to the present.  The course will provide an overview of Québécois history and geography as a backdrop to discussions of its unique cultural heritage.  A variety of primary materials will be used, including film, fiction (short stories or novel excerpts), and a book entitled A Short History of Quebec, 4th Edition (John Dickenson and Brian Young.  McGill-Queen’s UP, 2008).  Course topics will include: the founding of Quebec City (1608), the Conquest and Quebec’s role in the American Revolution (1759-83), the Papineau Rebellion and Canadian Dominion (1837-67), the “Great Darkness” and Quiet Revolution (1939-70), separatist movements and questions of Quebec’s role in North America and la Francophonie (1970 to present). About the Instructors

Dr. Bierschenk was appointed Director of Choral Activities at Texas Wesleyan University beginning in the Fall of 2007.  In addition to conducting the Wesleyan Singers, the Wesleyan Chamber Singers, and Wesleyan Chorale, he teaches courses in Music Education, Conducting, and Applied Music in voice and high brass instruments.

Dr. Fisher, professor of music, is in his sixth year as chairman of the Music Department at Texas Wesleyan University. He has also served for more than twenty-one years as coordinator of the theory and keyboard divisions there. His professional activities include studio piano instruction, music theory, form and analysis, and the music of women composers.

Detailed Itinerary

Monday, May 17

We’ll check in at the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport for our flights to Montreal.  Upon arrival, we’ll meet our tour manager and transfer to the waiting motor coach.  The first drive of our tour takes us to Trois Rivières. Following hotel check-in, dinner this evening will be provided at a local restaurant.
   
Tuesday, May 18  
Our day begins with a guided walking tour of the Old Town and a visit to the National Historic site of Les-Forges-Du-St.-Maurice, site of Canada’s first iron-making operation. In the afternoon, we’ll have some free time for shopping and independent exploration. Later we’ll join together for dinner at a local restaurant.This evening a concert performance is planned.
   
Wednesday, May 19  
After breakfast this morning, we’ll depart for Quebec City.  Built atop a rocky promontory jutting into the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City is Canada’s oldest city.  Upon arrival, a panoramic city tour and time for an independent lunch are planned.  Later check into the hotel.  The remainder of the day will be at leisure.
   
Thursday, May 20  
A guided tour of Quebec City is planned today.  Highlights of this charming town include the Citadel, Plains of Abraham, Place Royal and a walking tour of the Lower Town.  The tour ends at the world renowned Chateau Frontenac.  There will be free time for independent lunch and exploration.  This evening, a concert performance is planned.
 
Friday, May 21
Today an excursion is planned to the famous Sainte-Anne-De-Beaupre Basilica.  While here, we plan to give a mid-day concert performance.  Next visit Montmorency Falls Park.  En route back to Quebec City, we will travel via “The Kings Highway” to have an opportunity to see some typical Quebec architecture.  The remainder of the day will be at leisure.
 
Saturday, May 22
After breakfast, we’ll return to Montreal.  Upon arrival, our guided city sightseeing tour will include a visit to Old Montreal and the Olympic Park.  After the tour, we’ll check in at the hotel for a two-night stay.  The remainder of the day will be at leisure.
 
Sunday, May 23
This morning we’ll participate as a choir in a morning worship service.  Following the service and time for an independent lunch, visits are planned to both L’Oratorie Saint-Joseph du Mont Royal and the Basilica of Our Lady of Montreal.  There will also be free time for independent exploration.  This evening we’ll join together for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
 
Monday, May 24
After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the airport for the return flights to the U.S.

What is Included  

Air transportation, ground transportation for the itinerary via deluxe motor coach, accommodations in moderate hotels (4 to a room with each person with a twin-size bed), select meals
(breakfast each day and four dinners), sightseeing and admission fees for items included in the above itinerary, tipping and taxes for all services included in the tour cost, medical protection plan.

 
What is NOT Included

Any room upgrades or flight upgrades, lunch, dinner on the 19th, 21st, and 22nd, trip cancellation insurance, travel protection insurance, lost luggage insurance.
