Workshop Opportunity Discovery Mathematics Phase I -Year 1: Middle School Math Content Phase II - Year 2: Algebra I Teaching Methods
Announcement: Texas Wesleyan University has been awarded a grant for conducting a Discovery Mathematics Workshop for upper elementary, and middle school and high school grade teachers of mathematics. Wesleyan is currently accepting applications. This is the sixteenth year that Wesleyan has offered these workshops.
A total of twenty teachers may participate. If you are interested, I encourage you to fill out the application form attached and return it immediately.
Content: The workshop will cover Teaching Methods in Algebra I. Phase I/Year 1 will Middle School content and Phase II-Year two will cover teaching methods in Algebra I.
Emphasis: The workshop will emphasize building content knowledge and hands-on activities. It will provide opportunities to match hands-on science activities to math, reading, and writing TEKS objectives for your grade level.
Level: The workshop will focus is on material useful to the upper elementary, middle and high school teachers.
Credit: The workshop carries with it six hours of graduate level credit in Mathematics, which can be applied, to a master's degree in Education if desired (3 in the Summer of 2006 and 3 in the Fall/Spring of 2005/06 and 3 in the Summer of 2007 and 3 in the Fall/Spring of 2007/08).
Cost: All cost are covered by the Teacher Quality Grant.
Stipend: The grant provides a $300 summer stipend and reimbursement of meals and travel in the Fall. An additional $300 stipend may be awarded to FWISD teachers by the district (budget permitting). In addition, all participants will receive of materials for use in their classroom.
Conference: The Grant will support travel to CAMT.
Dates: The workshop is conducted in three weeks (1:00 p.m. – 4:30) in the summer Monday through Friday from June 26 to July 18, 2006, and on Saturday mornings during the Fall & Spring terms (about 16 meetings will be scheduled in cooperation with the participants early in the workshop). No classes on July 3rd & 4th.
