Careers in Music

Conductor

A conductor has musical talent, leadership qualities, and the ability to work with people.  Conductors demonstrate superior musicianship and an extensive knowledge of music history, literature, and orchestration.  A career as a conductor can consist of a variety of tasks ranging from fundraising, rehearsing, scheduling, and performing to programming, supervising personnel, and working in educational programs.

Vocalist

As a vocalist, one displays the ability to read music, knowledge of vocal literature, skill in sight-singing and memorization, specialized skill in singing and interpreting songs, and experience in singing solos.  Vocalists are involved in a variety of musical career areas that include concerts, recordings, radio and television commercials, Broadway musicals, teaching, etc.

Education-Elementary/Secondary Level

Being a music teacher at the elementary/secondary level is considered a rewarding and enjoyable profession where satisfaction comes purely from helping students learn and understand the beauty and power that music has behind it.  Music teachers at the elementary/secondary level are required to be flexible where as teaching musical instruction for both instruments and vocals is part of the job description.

Other Careers

The music industry is very broad and offers careers that come in a variety of different titles, such as a community arts manager, community development specialist, composer, music critic, music editor, instrument designer, instrument sales representative, instrumentalist, music librarian, performing arts administrator, music publisher, recording engineer, synthesist, music supervisor/administrator, studio/private teacher, music therapist, etc.
