Teaching Circles: Orientation Meeting – Thursday, 9/13 For many faculty members, opportunities to talk about teaching are limited to brief encounters with colleagues in the hallways. During these encounters, there is rarely enough time to discuss the more substantive and stimulating teaching and learning issues. If you’re interested in having deeper conversations about teaching and learning, now you will have your chance. Wesleyan is creating Cross-Discipline Teaching Circles. A Teaching Circles orientation meeting will be held in the University Club (OSH 1st Floor) from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm. Lunch will be provided by the Office of the Provost. All interested in participating should attend. ABCs of the IRB: Getting your Research Approved – Thursday, 9/27 Are you considering doing any research involving human subjects or live animals? You may need the approval of Wesleyan’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) to meet federally mandated guidelines for research. Dr. Marcel Kerr will present a brief overview of the roles and goals of the IRB and take you through the steps necessary to get your research proposal approved. The event will take place on Thursday, September 27th in NBC 102 from 12:15 to 1:15 pm. Lunch will be provided for all in attendance. Successful Student Advising: Practical Tips and Strategies – Thursday, 10/11 Did you know that how well you advise your students has a direct – and significant – impact on their satisfaction with your program, your colleagues, and Texas Wesleyan as a whole? When it comes to advising, students today are very demanding - but not unreasonable. They evaluate the quality of the advising you provide based on certain factors and expectations. Find out what your students expect during advising and want in an advisor. Join Dr. Kathy Prater on Thursday, October 18th at 12:15 pm in the Bragan Fellowship Hall (PUMC 1st Floor) for practical tips and proven strategies for success. Lunch will be provided for all in attendance. Grant Writing for Faculty: Getting Started – Thursday, 11/15 Join Drs. Linda Carroll and Stacia Neeley for a presentation and pointers on grant writing in higher education. This Brown Bag Luncheon will be held in the Orientation Room of the EJW Library (1st floor) from 12:15 – 1:15 pm. Improving Student Learning and Measuring Success – Friday, 2/8 What do you expect your students to learn? How can you really tell if your students are successful? You’ll find the answer to these questions and many others as Dr. Kim Rynearson takes you through the process of moving from a performance objective and learning outcome to an evaluation of student success. This Provost Professional Development Forum event will be held on Friday, February 8th in the Bragan Fellowship Hall (PUMC 1st Floor) from 12:15 to 1:30 pm. Lunch will be provided for all in attendance. Innovative Teaching with Technology – Thursday, 4/3 As new technologies are introduced into the classroom instructors are empowered to tailor their instruction to the needs of students and connect the classroom to the world outside. Join Dr. Chitra Chandrasekaran as she demonstrates some of the instructional possibilities the new Bio-informatics technology has made possible. This demonstration will take place on Thursday, April 3rd in Room 108 of the Schollmaier Science and Technology Center from 12:15 to 1:15 pm. Lunch will be provided for all in attendance. Teaching Circles: Wrap Up Meeting – Thursday, 4/24 With the spring semester coming to a close the participants of the 2007-2008 Cross-Discipline Teaching Circles come together for an open discussion of their experiences. At this meeting each group presents some of the more interesting topics covered during the academic year and discusses ideas for improving future Circles. The meeting will take place on Thursday, April 24th in the University Club (OSH 1st Floor) from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm. Lunch will be provided by the Office of the Provost. The event is not limited to Teaching Circle participants. Anyone interested in participating should attend. |
