FORT WORTH, Texas -
The Texas Wesleyan Table Tennis team hosted its First Annual
Banquet April 29th at the Bragen Fellowship Hall in the
Polytechnic United Methodist Church.
Dr. Hal Jeffcoat, president of Texas Wesleyan, was the keynote
speaker at the banquet, which featured the 2004 National
Collegiate Champion Rams and honored four team members for their
accomplishments during the past year.
Winning the 3D Table Tennis award for this year was Sabrina
Worrell. The freshman from Barbados started the year on the
junior varsity but worked her way up to the varsity. She took
home third place in singles and teamed with freshman Biljana
Golic to win the 2004 Collegiate Women's Doubles title.
"Sabrina struggled with some injuries but never complained,"
head coach Christian Lillieroos said. "She was determined to do
her best and put in the necessary work."
Sophomore Eric Owens was named Table Tennis Scholar Athlete of
the Year. The Houston, Texas native, has won five national
collegiate championships in his 2+ years at Texas Wesleyan.
Owens also carries a lofty 3.75 GPA in biochemistry and is
planning on attending medical school after graduation. Freshman
Andre Scott was this year's Table Tennis Coach's award winner.
The Elizabeth, New Jersey native, was the national champion for
Men's Wheelchair Table Tennis athletes. "Andre has always
thought about what is best for the team," Lillieroos said. "He
has shown up on time almost every training session despite his
personal challenges."
Wesleyan freshman Bijana Golic was named this year's most
valuable player. The Serbian and Monte Negro native, won three
titles at this year's Collegiate Championships: women's singles,
women's doubles and mixed doubles. She didn't lose a single
game en route to these championships. She was also featured on
ESPN for her participation in the Killerspin Extreme
Championships.
A promotional DVD featuring the Wesleyan National Championship
team was shown and banquet participants were allowed to compete
for 2004 National Championship T-shirts.
