TEXAS WESLEYAN AND STANFORD

WIN NCTTA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORT WORTH, TX:  Texas Wesleyan University won it’s third consecutive National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) Men’s National Championship while Stanford took home the women’s title on the final day of competition in the Clear Channel National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships.

Texas Wesleyan University hosted the three-day event in the Sid Richardson Center.  The Rams entered the tournament ranked #1 in the nation, and did not lose a single match on the final day of competition.  They defeated #8 Virginia Tech, #20 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and #2 Princeton in succession, each with scores of 3-0.  In the final, Ludovic Gombos set the table for Texas Wesleyan by upsetting the top ranked player in the tournament, Princeton’s Adam Hugh in the opening match.  Gombos won 3-0 with very tight scores of 11-8, 11-8, and 11-8.

Texas Wesleyan ended RPI’s Cinderella run.  The team from Troy, NY, entered the tournament as the 20th seed, but pulled off a series of upsets, including wins over #9 Illinois Institute of Technology, and #3 UC-San Diego to reach the semifinals.

In the women’s bracket, #4 Stanford knocked off #2 Toronto in a thrilling 3-2 match for the National Title.  Toronto reached the final by defeating #3 Virginia Tech in the semifinals after the Hokies shocked top ranked Texas Wesleyan in the quarterfinals.

Texas Wesleyan made the championship draw after despite a controversial loss to Southern California on Saturday.  However, controversy continued to follow the Lady Rams.  In their match with Virginia Tech, the Lady Rams submitted their lineup late, and were forced to go with less than their best in a decisive doubles match.  Texas Wesleyan protested that decision, but their protest was withdrawn.

Meanwhile all three of Stanford’s matches came down to the final doubles match.  They defeated #5 Ohio State, and #6 USC with scores of 3-2 to reach the final.  Their dream ride continued when the final came down to the doubles play of Whitney Ping and Kyna Fong who finished second in Saturday’s ACUI doubles championship.  Ping and Fong defeated Ling Liu and Pei Pei Zheng with scores of 12-10, 11-6, and 11-2 to seal the championship.
