Subject: Assignment
for Changing Roles of Men and Women
Dear Class,
The Changing Roles of Men and Women class is
meeting this weekend.
According to the Weekend University procedures,
students are to come with a first assignment completed.
For that assignment, I would like you to look up
Billy Tipton. If you do a google search, you will find a lot of material. I
especially want you to go to the following website, and listen to the tape made
by Billy Tipton, sent to his/her mother at Christmas. The site is http://www.dianemiddlebrook.com/tipton/
There are several other sites on Billy Tipton, as well.
We will be reading a book on him/her called "Suits Me: Double Life of
Billy Tipton" by Diane Middlebrook. The bookstore will be getting the book
in. It was published in 1998, so copies should be easily available (public
library, Half Price Books, etc). I am hoping that you will be able to read some
of the book by class. But if not, at least be familiar with the story, and
listen to the tape.
The assignment is to write your impression of this person's life.
The other two books for this class are:
Mismeasure of Woman by Carol Tavris (Touchstone 1992)
As Naure Made Him by John Calapinto (Harper Collins 2000)
These two books are quite common as well.
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!
Dr. Horsfall
